Extremely Rare M.33.42-Z.2

Technically sharper, probably VF25, but pitted, strongest behind the portrait. Specks of greenish verdigris show in some of the pits and the pitting was smoothed in the field at the throat and below NEC. In addition there is a planchet fissure through the neck that allows peeps of daylight to pass through. A small dig on the nose and a couple fine scratches down the portrait round out the negatives. On the positive side the toning is an attractive and slightly glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. Relatively early die state and nicely struck. The strike is nicely centered, the date is strong, and the legends are clear. Called “Possibly Finest Known” in the Perkins catalog. Comes with a nice provenance. The Hall attribution is noted on the edge in white ink. Weight 116.8 grains.
