A “Snipe Nose” variety. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with a puff of darker reddish chocolate toning on the eye. The surfaces are smooth except for chipping that covers the lower half of the portrait and the opposing upper part of the seated figure due to a weak strike in those areas. The rest of this piece is flawless. Nicely centered; the reverse off just slightly to the bottom leaving the bottom edge of the date off the planchet. Otherwise the date and legends are complete and strong. A strong die crack reaches across the obverse, and the “Snipe Nose” feature is bold. The attribution is noted (rather clumsily) in white ink before the portrait. Weight 134.1 grains.

Ex David Sonderman 9/1978-Robert M. Martin (includes the Martin collection envelope).
